Even though you don’t live here, you are still a member of Graduate College. You can still come to any Intro Week events you want to and to any of the other events (social or otherwise) throughout the year.
Not arriving in October?
If you arrive part way through an academic year and you want to make sure you are receiving information about events and College news, email Jane Hulland and she will make sure you are on her mailing lists.
Facilities
The college facilities are open to you (see here), so please feel free to use them and to make any suggestions for improvements and additions you think would be useful.
There is a room specifically for off-campus students – especially those of you who cycle or walk. It is very basic but has a shower, loo, microwave and kettle and a few storage lockers for things you don’t want to carry around all day. To access this room you’ll need a key from the College Administrator (£10 returnable deposit required).
Commuting to the University
Chances are, you’re living in Lancaster or the surrounding area and will need to get to the University regularly.
- Bus services during termtime are extremely good between Lancaster and campus – out of termtime they are less frequent but still pretty good. You should look for numbers X1, 2, 2A, 3 or 4. All of these travel from Lancaster to campus on various routes. X1 and 3 travel via Greaves and Scotforth (straight down the A6) and the others all go through Hala. Timetables can be found on the Stagecoach website, click here…
- Several of these buses also service Morecambe, but if you are coming from a village near Lancaster such as Galgate, Garstang, Caton, Halton or from Preston then the service is less frequent.
- You can buy termly or annual bus pass which will save you money on coming to campus each day – these are available from LUSU (the Student Union)
- If you are cycling then invest in some lights and some waterproofs (jacket, trousers, socks, gloves) trust me, you’ll be pleased you did! And remember that all traffic signals, signs, pedestrian crossings etc. apply to you as you are still a road user (just on two wheels rather than four). If you want to buy a bike for commuting them GreenLancaster on campus do good deals and can supply accessories (lights, locks etc) at good prices too. If you want something a bit more special then there are three good bike shops in Lancaster (Leisure Lakes, The Edge and Destination Cycles).
- If you are walking, it takes around an hour at an unhurried pace to walk from the city centre to campus using a direct route. There are prettier longer routes but save those for a nice day. Again, you will probably want a waterproof jacket and trousers and some decent shoes (not flip flops) if you are walking regularly, umbrellas don’t tend to last long in Lancaster.
